Wishing all families who celebrate, Happy New Year!
We had quite an exciting week at Beckett Farm PS. Our celebration on Friday included the culmination of Tamil Heritage Month with performances by one of our own students playing the classical violin. Way to go Aatharshi! As well, we were treated to a beautiful classical dance and drumming performance by other talented students at our school.

In addition, we had a very engaging and informative performance by Sunny Tang and his crew for Lunar New Year. He taught us about the origin of Lunar New Year, some martial arts techniques and drumming, as well as a very exciting lion dance. "Ralph" the lion eventually caught the dangling lettuce and graciously gave it back to the audience to spread good luck and fortune to the Beckett Farm family.

As we work towards the end of Term 1 (wow - already?), we will be finishing up some tasks in Health with a short quiz on Monday, and Drama presentations the following week.

Noteworthy items to look forward to this week:

- Winter Activity Day - Thursday, Feb. 2 - Students who opted to go Tubing will be going to Lakeridge Ski Resort. Students who opted to stay at school will be participating in some fun activities including cooking in the staff kitchen!

- P.A. Day - Friday, Feb. 3 - No school

A gentle reminder to everyone to dress warmly. I have asked the students to always bring hats, gloves, and boots to school, even if they do not need to wear them. The weather has been changing drastically throughout the day and many of the children are coming in with very cold fingers, ears, and toes!

Thank you so much for your continued support. I appreciate it!

Sincerely,

Mrs. McIntosh

Once again, Beckett Farm PS will be holding a spelling bee competition for students in grades 3-8. I have sent home the list of words that will be used in Round 1 next week. After Round 2, four to five students from our class will be selected to participate in the finals taking place towards the end of February. All families are welcome to attend  this exciting event!

In the classroom...
In Math, we are finishing up our unit on Data Management and will be having a summative test on Thursday, Jan. 19th. In class, students have been practicing how to create different types of graphs in order to display and analyse the data. We will continue to gather data next week and select the appropriate graph in which to display the data.
In Social Studies, students have begun their research on one of the seven physical regions of Canada. They will be creating a brochure to highlight the many features of this region. Please sign the project outline sent home.
Please continue to ask your child about what they are learning at school. Remember to also ask, "What was your rose, bud, and thorn today?" I would also like to add a gentle reminder to not send any peanut/nut products to school, as well as any food with eggs (for example, scrambled, fried, boiled) as we have students in our class with severe allergies to these foods.
Thank you everyone for your generosity before the break, and your continued support in your child's learning and living at school.
Sincerely.
Mrs. McIntosh
